Setting Up Your First Rental Home in Canada
Prioritize the essentials for your first rental and avoid buying furniture before checking the space.
Your first rental does not need to be fully furnished on the day you move in. Planning purchases in stages can make the move more manageable and reduce the chance of buying items that do not fit.
Prepare a first-night kit
Keep bedding, towels, toiletries, basic kitchen supplies, chargers and cleaning materials together. Pack them where you can reach them without opening every box. Confirm which appliances are supplied before bringing or ordering your own.
Measure before buying
Measure the rooms, doorways and route from the building entrance. A sofa may fit a room but not a staircase. Decide where larger items will go before shopping, and ask about delivery access or elevator bookings where relevant.
Build around daily needs
Start with sleeping, eating and a comfortable place for work or study. Add decorative items later, once you understand storage and light in the home. Keep a list of purchases and delivery dates so costs stay within the move-in budget. Review the agreement before making alterations or mounting fixtures.
