Moving Between Provinces: A Renter's Planning Guide

Plan an interprovincial rental move by checking timelines, agreements and the rules at both ends.

← Rental Guides

An interprovincial move involves two housing arrangements: the home you are leaving and the one you are entering. Treat them as separate projects with their own dates, documents and applicable rules.

Work backward from possession day

Confirm when you can collect the new keys before booking transportation. Allow for travel delays and consider where you will stay if the move-out and move-in dates do not line up. Keep essential items accessible rather than buried in the moving load.

Check both sets of rules

Tenancy rules vary across Canada. Verify the process for ending your current agreement with the authority in your current province, and review the requirements for the new tenancy in your destination. Do not reuse a notice deadline you heard about elsewhere without checking it.

Keep one move folder

Store agreements, contact numbers, inventories and moving confirmations together. Arrange service changes only after confirming what the new rent includes. For a move to Manitoba, use local Residential Tenancies Branch information and our Winnipeg rental guide as starting points.
