Rental Scam Warning Signs in Canada
Learn how to slow down, verify a rental listing and recognize pressure before sending money or sensitive documents.
An attractive listing deserves the same checking as any other rental. The Competition Bureau warns that scammers can reuse genuine photos and impersonate landlords. Good photographs alone do not establish that the person advertising a home has authority to rent it.
Look for pressure and inconsistencies
Be cautious about an unusually low price, demands for payment before you can properly verify the rental, or a person who claims to be abroad and cannot arrange access. These are reasons to investigate, not proof that every unusual listing is fraudulent.
Verify through an independent route
Check the address and contact the property manager through a separately verified website or phone number. Compare the details across listings. Ask to see the exact unit and a clear agreement before committing money.
Protect your documents
Do not upload identification or financial information through an unfamiliar link simply because an email requests it. If something feels rushed, pause. Keep copies of messages and payment requests, and consult official fraud guidance before proceeding.
