Festival of Fools: A Spring-Break Outing at a Family Pace
Make a free spring-break performance outing manageable with children.
The Festival of Fools is a free family event held during school spring break by the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival. It offers a useful anchor for a day off without requiring a full week of expensive plans.
Choose one performance first
Read the current schedule and pick one session that suits your children’s interests and attention spans. Add a second activity only if there is enough time for a snack, washroom break and moving between spaces. “Free” does not mean every activity will have unlimited room.
Plan around your household
Choose a time that works with meals and naps rather than whichever performance appears first on the poster. If you are meeting another family, agree on a specific meeting point and a backup plan for a late arrival. Give each adult the program link.
Keep the rest of the day simple
Bring only what you can comfortably carry and check the current venue information for stroller access and other practical needs. A nearby meal or a quiet stop afterwards can be enough; the outing does not need to become a full-day itinerary.
Spring-break programming changes between editions, so use the organizer’s current dates and location. Ask children what they noticed after the show—an unexpected sound, a funny moment or a new performance skill. That small conversation can extend the experience well beyond the time spent in the audience.
