Ending or Transferring a Winnipeg Rental: Where to Start

Identify your agreement and consult Manitoba guidance before planning a move-out, assignment or sublet.

← Rental Guides

A change in plans does not automatically end a tenancy. Before booking your next move, read your current agreement and identify whether you need information about ending it, assigning it or subletting.

Clarify the route first

Those options are not interchangeable. Manitoba's Residential Tenancies Branch provides separate guidance on notices, assignment and subletting. Check the process that applies to your agreement instead of assuming that finding another occupant releases you from your responsibilities.

Get the required consent

The Branch states that an assignment or sublet requires the landlord's written consent. Its guidance also explains limits on refusing consent and situations where a transfer may not be available. Consult the full guidance for your circumstances before making promises to another person.

Coordinate the practical handover

Once the arrangement is confirmed, agree on keys, access and the relevant dates. Keep correspondence and signed documents together. Arrange the condition inspection and cleaning plan where applicable, and ask how service accounts should be handled. A documented handover reduces uncertainty for everyone involved.
